Botox in the Dental Office
Mission Park Dental in Kelowna is proud to offer Botox Cosmetic services for our patients. You might wonder why Botox treatment is offered in a dental office. Dentists have an extraordinary knowledge of facial, head and neck anatomy – the areas of your body that they work with every day! They study and understand the intricacies of facial muscles and their movements so that they are better able to provide esthetic dental and facial treatments. These aptitudes, combined with their skills in routinely delivering injections of local anesthesia in sensitive areas make dentists the ideal candidate to provide this service. Furthermore, having your Botox treatment administered by your dentist offers a level of privacy and discreetness, as you can simply say you have a dental appointment.
What is Botox® Cosmetic?
BOTOX Cosmetic® is an approved, safe prescription drug which is used both cosmetically and therapeutically. While most people think of Botox as wrinkle prevention treatment, but before it was used for that, it has actually been in use for over 20 years for the treatment of a range of medical conditions such as blepharospasm and hyperhydrosis. One of the biggest users of Botox are Children's Hospitals where children as young as 2 years old receive Botox to treat cerebral palsy, spina bifida, infant hip disorders, malformation of feet in infants due to the fact that it helps relax muscles. Due to its long history and wide range of uses, Botox is one of the most researched and safest drug in the world.
Beyond its medincinal use, Botox® is used cosmetically to reduce frown lines, forehead lines, bunny lines on the nose, and crow's feet around the eyes. By temporarily blocking nerve impulses that cause excessive muscle contractions it will minimize and even block the formation of wrinkles. BOTOX® injections can give your face a smoother and more relaxed appearance without affecting the character of facial expressions. A few small injections can produce natural-looking results that can last up to 3-4 months.
Therapeutically, Botox® has also shown significant benefits, particularly for people who have Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders and teeth clenching/grinding problems, which can cause a great deal of discomfort and potentially damage teeth. The relaxation of facial muscles that BOTOX® provides can offer significant relief to affected people. In many cases BOTOX® treatments can be a viable alternative to more traditional remedies such as dental splints or mouth guards.
The muscle relaxant effects of BOTOX® can also be used to help address migraine headaches and muscles that involuntarily twitch or spasm. Many people who suffer from headaches have found significant relief through BOTOX® applications, with the severity and frequency of their headaches being substantially reduced.
