What is the TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex, dual joint located on either side of the face, connecting the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull. It functions like a hinge, allowing us to open, close, and move our jaws when speaking, chewing, or yawning. When this joint is stressed, inflamed, or misaligned, it can lead to TMD. The effects of TMD can extend beyond oral health, impacting the neck, ears, and overall well-being.

Common Symptoms of TMD:

  • Jaw pain or discomfort
  • Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw
  • Chronic headaches or migraines
  • Facial pain or earaches
  • Difficulty chewing or limited jaw movement
  • Lockjaw or stiffness in the jaw
  • Worn, chipped, or fractured teeth

One of the most common causes of TMD is bruxism, or involuntary teeth grinding or clenching. Often, it is an involuntary response to stress, a side effect of certain medications, or due to trauma. Grinding your teeth may lead to not only tooth fracture and sensitivity, but it also exerts extra tension on your jaw joints and can lead to further complications if left untreated.

Treatment Options for TMD:

  1. Night Guard/Occlusal Splint: A custom-fitted oral appliance designed to protect the biting surfaces of your teeth, reduce teeth grinding (bruxism), and alleviate jaw strain..
  2. Botox Therapy: Targeted injections can relax overactive jaw muscles, relieving tension and discomfort.
  3. Medications: Anti-inflammatory or muscle relaxant medications may be recommended.
Jaw exercises & Home Care Recommendations
  4. Dental Occlusal Adjustments: Restoring a balanced bite through minor dental modifications
